Got a fedora box up and working on my network as a normal desktop, not a server.
What do I need to do to be able to browse to my other windows 2000 PCs and see their files?
Is this a samba thing?
Just want to make sure.

Thanks!

> UAE - Compiling for network access
Posted by Memphisartguy - 07-9-05 03:11 - 3 comments
So I used WinUAE to set up a nice Amiga OS 3.9, with a Cnet Pro BBS, debugged the telser.deviced and telnetd.device to work with the CnEt Pro. Every thing runs great.

So when moving to the Linux platform I have to compile the configure file with the bsddevice-=new uncommented.

How do I Compile this? Nothing has yet to make a binary I can use.

I am using the latest version of E-UAE

Been trying to follow these instructions in Fedora Core 4

Every things cool unitl step three. Sense these instructions are 1 year old, i have adapted it a little. Main issue is part 3

rpm -ivh ~/httpd-2.0.40-21.16.legacy.src.rpm

Does this.

warning: ./httpd-2.0.50-1.0.src.rpm: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 4f2a6fd2
1:httpd ########################################### [100%]

No files are created as the guide below says should happen.

-------------------------- missing how to -----------------------------
Here's how to rebuild Apache from SRPM, including the change you want to make.

1. Grab the httpd SRPM from the FC1 updates:

% wget http://download.fedora.us/fedora/fe....48-1.2.src.rpm

2. Set up your RPM build area:

% echo "%_topdir /home/yourname/src/rpm" >> ~/.rpmmacros
% mkdir -p ~/src/rpm/
% cd ~/src/rpm
% mkdir BUILD RPMS RPMS/i386 SOURCES SPECS SRPMS

3. Install the SRPM:

% rpm -ivh ~/httpd-2.0.48-1.2.src.rpm

This will put the source tarball and patches in SOURCES, and a specfile (metadata and instructions for building) in SPECS.

4. Edit the specfile, bumping up the release number, changing the suexec docroot, and noting this in the changelog:

% vi SPECS/httpd.spec

line 8:
< Release: 1.2
> Release: 1.3

line 202:
< --with-suexec-docroot=%{contentdir} \
> --with-suexec-docroot=/home \

line 510:
%changelog
* Tue May 18 2004 Your Name <you@yours> 2.0.48-1.3
- Rebuilt with suexec-docroot set to /home instead of %{contentdir}

5. Rebuild httpd, creating both a binary RPM and a source SRPM:

% rpmbuild -ba SPECS/httpd.spec

You may have to install some additional packages to satisfy build dependencies here. When it's done, you'll have binary packages in RPMS/i386/, and a source package including your modified specfile in SRPMS/.

6. You can now either upgrade to the httpd you just compiled...

% sudo rpm -Fvh RPMS/i386/httpd*.rpm RPMS/i386/mod_ssl*.rpm

7. ...or simply extract the suexec binary and copy it over the original one:

% rpm2cpio RPMS/i386/httpd-2.0.48-1.3.i386.rpm | cpio -imVd ./usr/sbin/suexec
% sudo cp -p /usr/sbin/suexec /usr/sbin/suexec.orig
% sudo cp ./usr/sbin/suexec /usr/sbin/suexec
% sudo chown root:apache /usr/sbin/suexec
% sudo chmod 4510 /usr/sbin/suexec

Personally, I haven't yet had any problems with just keeping the suexec binary I compiled months ago and reusing it with later updates of Apache (i.e., repeat step 7 after installing an httpd update), YMMV. Obviously if there is ever a security update involving suexec itself, though, you should rebuild again.

Hi,

I was curious on how you could limit users surfing the Internet, I found KobrAs's guide useful biggrin.gif
I setup a group called Internet and assigned users to it and apply this to my iptable

CODE
iptables -t filter -A OUTPUT -p tcp -dport 80 --match owner --gid-owner 501 -j DROP

This worked great, but I was wondering if you had your users logging in all over your network
using LDAP, How could you make these rules apply still?

> Slackware kernel upgrade to 2.6.12.2
Posted by tinman77 - 07-2-05 23:03 - 6 comments
I am having problems with a kernel upgrade to 2.6.12.2 on my Inpsion 6000d. I have WinXP and Slackware dual boot on a 40 gig HD. I compiled the kernel many times selecting different combinations of options and every single time I get a kernel panic:

VFS: Cannot open root device "303" or unknown-block(3,3)
Please append a corrrect "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown block(3,3)

I have read on other forums and miscellaneous pages that the Inspiron 6000 has SATA type setup for the hard drive and that changing lilo to point to /dev/sda3 instead of the current /dev/hda3 solves it, along with many other ways of getting it to work. However, I am not so sure I have a SATA drive because using 2.4.29 my root filesystem points to /dev/hda3. Please, any help is appreciated.

i cannot find support for the sound blaster 128 pci card with ensoniq 5880 chipset.

lspci:
Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI (rev 02)

i've read that es1371 supports it, however, although it seems to initialize, alsa errors out with it. it's my presumption that this is not the right module.

anyone have this chipset working in linux?

> Audio Driver for Fedora Core 4
Posted by JerLasVegas - 06-16-05 20:12 - 1 comments
I have, what Windows XP, reports as a Conexant AC-Link Audio card in my Gateway 7324gz laptop computer.

In the Details Section, the Device Insance ID is:
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24c5&SUBSYS_202F161F&REV_03\3&267A616A&0&FD

In the Resources Section:
I/O Range E400-E4FF
EE80-EEBF
Memory Range E02FF800 - E02FF9FF
Memory Range E02FF400 - E02FF4FF
IRQ 17

It works fine in Windows XP.

In Fedora Core 4, when I use detect sound card, the soundcard is detected as :
Intel
Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller
snd-intel8x0

lsmod lists this related information:
snd_intel8x0m 22084 0
snd_intel8x0 36160 1
snd_ac97_codec 74744 2 snd_intel8x0m,snd_intel8x0
snd_seq_oss 36608 0
snd_seq_midi_event 11776 1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq 55184 4 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_seq_device 13068 2 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq
snd_pcm_oss 55840 0
snd_mixer_oss 23040 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_pcm 93700 5 snd_intel8x0m,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pc m_oss
snd_timer 29188 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd 58212 11 snd_intel8x0m,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_s eq_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore 13792 1 snd
snd_page_alloc 14212 3 snd_intel8x0m,snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm

When I press test sound, the application needs to be force quitted becuase it crashes.

Gateway's specifications page for this notebook report this card as:
PC2001 compliant AC' 97 audio

The full specifications are here: http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Gatewa...103099sp3.shtml

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the audio working with Linux?

> starting PCMCIA before Eth0
Posted by woppa30 - 05-13-05 08:17 - 1 comments
Hi all, I hope somebody can help me out.
I have an old dell Insprion 3500 laptop that is dual boot with W2K and Fedora Core 2. Thats not the problem, I know how to remove winblows....
In the laptop there is a Xircom PCMCIA 10/100 +56K ethernet / modem card. On boot up the computer tries to bring up Eth0 before it has started the PCMCIA services, and so fails. Its easy enough to sort out manually with a "service network restart" but a bit of a pain. Does anybody know how I change settings so that the PCMCIA starts before Eth0 ??
Thanks in advance,
woppa

I'm curious as to what everyone likes for a printing system. I dont know much/anything about it though. I know that cups is the old timer for linux but I was thinking that there were other options. I'd like to know what other options there are, their pros and cons..etc..

Thanks

> Read only linux
Posted by AndyC - 04-28-05 12:03 - 3 comments
Hi All
An utter noob to Linux I now have a mini itx pc to build. I am going to be installing it in my car and it will have a 8" touch screen. I need it to do the following:

1 play Mp3's
2 play the odd dvd/divx
3 work as a sat nav system (http://www.directions.ltd.uk/)

Now because of speed and shock resistance I have the following storage devices:

IDE- to compact flash converter + 512mb CF
20gb 2.5 hdd
DVDr / CDr/rw drive

I want to install Linux to the CF and make it read only as this apparently stops the CF from breaking down over time with use. the other thing i would like to do is get it so that the MP3 file that is being played (+ the next one ideally) are played form ram and not the hard disk, while the HDD isnt in use I'd like it to self park so that when i hit those big potholes the hdd doesn't get damaged by the shock.

Interface wise I've used KDE and Gnome so I'm happy with either of them. I have a suse 9.3 DVD here but will go with what ever people feel is best! I will have to install samba as I need to copy multimedia to the HDD from time to time.

Can any one help?

Thanks

Andy

I've tried to install Fedora Core3 but I'm having trouble with the partitioning and boot-loader. I want to install it on my hard drive with Windows XP on it, but I also want to reserve some storage on the other, bigger hard-drive. I also don't want windows to boot automatically, I want to choose which one to boot from a menu. Please help me into the linux community, I'm learning C++ and would like to be able to contribute oneday. smile.gif
